DALnet Message Of The Day

It is a sad fact that it has been somewhat difficult to connect to DALnet for some time. There are several reasons for this, including ongoing attacks and a loss of servers. This weekend, these problems have increased. DALnet has been under an unusually strong, unusually persistent attack. These attacks are directed at all DALnet client servers, rather than just a few. The DALnet administration is working with service providers and with law enforcement to stop these attacks, but this is not an easy task. We apologize for the disruption, and ask that you bear with us through these difficult times.

Orange rumoured to soon take-over Austrian mobile operator O

The third largest Austrian mobile telecoms network operator One has refused to comment on rumours of an impending take-over by France Telecom's Orange. Magazine 'Format' reported that the France Telecom subsidiary Orange wants to acquire the shareholding in the Austrian telecoms company currently held by the German power company E.On. According to a One spokesman, the company would neither comment on nor confirm the rumours. The head office of E.On also refused to comment.

Coffee!

Coffee first made a splash in Vienna in 1683, when Turkish soldiers laying siege to the city retreated, leaving bags of unknown brown beans behind. Now, more than three centuries later, another outsider ? the American coffee shop chain Starbucks ? is bringing its trademark caramel macchiato and frappucino to the heart of this city known as the birthplace of the coffeehouse tradition. On Saturday, Starbucks opens a shop in Vienna's historic city center across from the venerable Vienna State Opera house ? the first of up to 15 shops the Seattle-based company plans for Austria over the next 18 months.

Austria EuroproNET Ready to buy More Bulgaria ISPs

Austria's EuroproNET Telecom AG, a major investor in Bulgaria's growing Internet sector, said on Friday it was ready to consider options to buy more Internet service providers (ISPs) in the Balkan state. EuroproNET aims to set up a Balkan ISP network by acquiring providers in Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Yugoslavia. It has said it planned to invest $20 million in the region by end-2003.

Haider on Tour of Arab Countries

Carinthian Regional Governor Joerg Haider left Austria on Wednesday for a previously unannounced tour of Egypt, Syria, Iran and Kuwait where he will meet various leaders to discuss ways of improving relations between Austria and those countries Former leader of the Freedom Party (FP) Joerg Haider set off on Wednesday on a previously unannounced tour of four Arab countries. According to a press statement from the Carinthian Region of which he is Governor, Haider´s first stop would be Egypt, followed by Syria, Iran and Kuwait. In Cairo, Minister of Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Zakzouk, Tourism Minister Mamdouh El Beltagui and Speaker of Parliament Fathi Sorour will receive him. According to the press statement Haider is travelling with official invitations. His talks would concentrate on political, economic and cultural issues.

Austrian fuel prices above EU regulations.

The Austrian motoring association OeAMTC has demanded a lowering of the domestic petrol prices by at least 40 groschen and diesel by at least 20 groschen to bring the prices into line with European Union guidelines. The European Union Commission revealed earlier this week that the Austrian fuel prices were higher than the official EU guidelines, prompting a demand from the Austrian motoring association OeAMTC that the prices for petrol and diesel be lowered immediately. Both the OeAMTC and the ARBOe are demanding the petrol price be lowered by 40 groschen and the diesel price lowered by 20 groschen per litre immediately.

Telekom Austria

VIENNA, Providence Equity Partners, the U.S. buyout firm that led the takeover of Ireland's biggest phone company in August, may bid for Telekom Austria a consultant to the group said today. The group is interested in buying the former state monopoly's fixed- line business, said Thomas Scheiner of Feldmann and Scheiner, a Vienna- based mergers and acquisitions adviser. Telekom Austria has a market value of about 4.2 billion euros ($3.8 billion). Last week, Telecom Italia said it wants to sell its almost 30 percent stake in Telekom Austria, Europe's best performing telecommunications stock this year. The Austrian government may soon sell its 47.8 percent stake to help balance the national budget, investors said.

Austria's Chancellor, Wolfgang Schuessel, has sent out strong signals that he is ready to drop the country's traditional neutrality and bring it into Nato. Mr Schuessel has long been an advocate of ditching Austria's neutral status - a legacy of its Cold War position sandwiched between East and West. But neutrality is considered an essential part of Austrian national identity and moves to drop it meet strong opposition.
